About this deal

I think my old ones were a tad light, but I did not weigh them and there was nothing on the head to show weight. If I had to use a tapered head because of restrictions I could do ok but I developed a feel for the square heads and could maintain accuracy better with them. I used every thing from the one handed sledge hammer, '4 pounder', to the heavier 20 lb sledge hammer. A sledgehammer is a robust tool with a large, flat head surface and a long handle, great for gathering the momentum needed in a swing for heavy duty construction or demolition work.

I mainly use a 12 for driving iron rod property corners, and if you are setting very many of them a heavier sledge will wear me down. I am looking to replace a couple of China no name sledge hammers that I sent off to the auction the other day.I was used to swinging 8-12 lb hammers and figured the 20 wouldn't be that much different and I could not have been more wrong. I owned a 10 pounder when I was a six-two, 275-pound weightlifter, and swinging that thing from over my shoulder for more than ten minutes forced me to take a long break a catch my breath.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I think a lot depends on the person swinging the hammer as well as how many times you would be swinging it. If you are a stronger person, someone who does manual labor a lot, and you find that you are breaking stone/concrete or driving post in to permafrost ground, in an area where accuracy is not important, then you might want to increase the weight to get done quicker. I laughed and handed it to my wife (who is much smaller) and she could barely lift it over her shoulder. That said, I’m 6’3” and a bit overweight at mid 230s, I would not recommend this product for those smaller in stature.

Groz Indestructible Handle Hammers meet ANSI specifications "Hand Tools - Heavy Striking Tools Safety Requirements", as well as BS 876 specifications for material, hardness and performance. Slamming a 20 lb head of this 25 lb hammer against solid concrete sent no repercussions up my arms whatsoever. I'm actually shocked there hasn't been a post yet from someone claiming to have easily used a 20 pounder when they were in kindergarten or some such nonsense. It would have been far harder or impossible to swing a lighter sledge with enough force to do what this can.

International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions. The size of the head allows additional force to be applied and distributed over a wide area with a variety of head weights available to suit the task at hand. The powerful force you can generate is also suitable for demolishing brick and studwork walls as well as driving home stakes. pound hammer is gonna be real awkward to swing unless it's underhand in my opinion, I'm short though so this might not apply to you.I preferred the square design over the tapered heads because if you were banging 2x4 stakes in the ground you could use the square head sideways and it wouldn't split the wood so easily as it hit the whole flat surface of the stake.
